Is your Billboard in Times Square or a Dark Alley?

Is your Billboard in Times Square or a Dark Alley

With any kind of advertising or publicity, the goal is to put your message in front of as many people as possible. Not just any people, but you want your ad to be seen by those people who are potential customers for the goods or services that you are selling. In other words, you want your message to be where it will have the maximum impact upon your sales. That holds true whether you are advertising with billboards, radio or television ads, or are acting as a corporate sponsor of a local charity. It also holds true on the internet.

The internet is unique in that the biggest potential source of potential customer traffic is completely free, at least at the surface level. That source is search engine results page rankings. Each month, some 14 billion searches are made through the top search engines by people looking for something on the internet. The vast majority of those searchers choose one of the top, first page results. Having your website appear on that first page, and especially among the top results of that first page is like having your message appear on the Jumbotron in Times Square instead of having it spray-painted on a wall in some dark alley.

In the world of internet searches, Google is the equivalent of Times Square. It’s where all the traffic is. All right, not all the traffic, but the overwhelming majority of internet search market share belongs to Google. Roughly 70 percent of internet searches take place on Google. When you are focusing on achieving high search engine placement for your website, Google is the place to start.

Google and other search engines use a variety of factors to determine the ranking for each website for any given search term. The process of building your website to maximize your search engine results ranking is called search engine optimization or SEO. Search engine optimization simple means that you do everything you can to let the automated algorithms used for ranking know that your website is highly relevant for those web users who are looking for the products and services that you offer on your website.

Some of this depends upon the HTML code of your website, some depends upon the quality of the content or text of your website, and some depends upon things like certain kinds of links to your website from other popular or highly ranked websites. The exact formulae used by search engines to determine a website’s search ranking are closely held secrets, so that search engine results are kept relevant and not monopolized by a few sites trying to game the system.

While it is free to appear on search engine results pages, a reasonable investment to make sure your website is properly optimized for the major search engines can be money well spent. Some search engine marketers will even help you cultivate incoming links to your site to help boost its search engine ranking that way. If you have a web business, search engine optimization can be the key to your success.

The Evolution of the Printer

Evolution of the Printer

Years ago dot matrix printers were all the rage and commonly the only thing available for personal and office printing needs. Using ribbons to get ink to paper, these printers made distinctly loud sounds while printing and printed slowly. Everyone remembers the paper with the ticker tape on the sides to help the paper feed through the printer properly. How many times did you sit trying to get the little teeth in the correct holes? Did you ever try to get the ribbon replaced just to have it jam immediately? These printers functioned, but were extremely frustrating at times.

In 1984, inkjet printers and therefore, printer cartridges full of ink became the next best thing available. Now, it was easy and faster to print documents. The ink cartridges lasted long periods of time and changing ink cartridges was easy. Ink cartridges were available in color and black and made it easy to print color documents right on the desktop. By 1990, these types of printers were widely accepted as the best way to print documents and blueprints from your computer. Most of these printers can now print 5-10 pages per minute and cost less than $100.

Inkjet printers made printing easier and more convenient for the user. Ink cartridges allow ink to be squirted onto the paper through tiny nozzles and this is called drop on demand printing. How much ink and where and how fast it gets on the paper is all controlled by software that comes with the printer and must be installed on the computer. These printers can print on any size paper or even fabric and film. They can be small enough to be kept on any desktop and quiet when printing.

Ink cartridges for these printers now come in many brands and colors. Each ink cartridge has an identification number and lists the model numbers it can be used with. The manual that comes with the printer should also list exactly which cartridge is appropriate for the printer.

The big problem is that ink cartridges can be expensive if you are doing a lot of printing. The more economical way is to have the cartridges refilled after each use. Refill kits can be purchased on drug and office supply stores. However, some people claim that the cartridges sometimes fail to work after they’ve been installed and reinstalled. Also, the print quality can be compromised with refill ink. Recycled cartridges are also available for a lower price at some retailers. These cartridges have been revamped and refilled by the manufacturer. Discounted printer ink cartridges can be purchased in bulk online if you plan to have a lot of printing needs, such as in a business situation.

Compared to earlier printers, inkjet printers have a number of advantages. One of the biggest is the idea of the inkjet printer cartridge being easy to install and refill. These printers print quietly and smoothly with finer details and higher resolution. Some inkjets even have photographic quality printing available. The evolution of printers has come along way since the dot matrix printer of the 70’s and 80’s.

Types of boots

Types of boots

Boots are a common type of footwear that almost always covers the foot and the ankle, sometimes even going all the way to the person’s hip. Depending on the type of boot, it can sometimes also cover part of all of the leg. Boots are worn by most as a statement of style and function. However, they also provide a certain level of functionality protecting the wearer from water, snow and mud and also provide ankle support.

Boots were originally designed for walking, riding or wading through the elements of weather or a particular work environment. Some of these specialty work boots are made to temporarily protect steelworkers if they get caught in pools of molten metal. Some protect chemical workers from exposure to chemicals that could spill on the floor where they are working. There are even boots that are insulated to protect feet from frostbite in Arctic like conditions when hiking or performing research. However, more commonly worn work boots today are made from heavy rubber soles with steel reinforced toes. These boots are usually lace up boots and are worn by construction workers or anyone that will be working in those kinds of conditions. They protect the feet from stepping on sharp objects such as nails or screws and/or having heavy things dropped on your feet and toes.

Specialty boots have been designed for all kinds of specialized sports and activities including hiking, motorcycle riding, horseback riding, skiing and snowboarding. Hiking boots are the hiker’s most important tool. They determine the hiker’s ability to move quickly and safely. These boots provide support and comfort over rough terrains. Motorcycle riders wear boots that are at least 12 inches high and straight sided with a low heel. These boots are made to protect the rider from the heat of the engine while riding. Snowboarding and skiing boots attach directly to the skis or snowboard. The user can release the board or skis with a click and walk in the boots without having to have their feet exposed to the snow. Horseback riding boots are made so that the boot will come high enough on the rider’s leg to prevent the saddle from pinching the leg of the rider. It also has a special heel to keep the foot from sliding out of the stirrup while riding.

Boots are also important in our military. Combat boots were designed especially for the United States Armed Forces, especially the infantry units. They were designed to be worn by soldiers in combat and combat training. These boots lace up the front and have an especially thick rubber outsole to protect the soldier’s feet from potentially rough environment and topography. They are made from hardened and waterproof leather. They can also come in many varieties depending on the condition, climate and necessity. There are jungle combat boots, desert boots, cold weather combat boots and even specialized boots for work in a tanker or parachuting missions.

As you can see, boots can be very specialized for a particular need. While many wear boots as a style statement or simply for comfort, there are many people who have boots on their feet for a very particular reason.

Broadband Technology

The world has many types of broadband service that can be used by our televisions, phones and computers to make our lives easier. Broadband connections typically offer a faster connection speed, which gives them a great edge on the market. The types of services offered by Broadband providers include ADSL, cable internet, and mobile broadband or wireless mobile broadband.

ADSL is the type of internet connection that uses the ADSL modem and connects to your phone line. This connection can be anywhere from six to four hundred times faster than dial up when downloading or uploading certain files and documents. This technology deletes the worry about getting or receiving phone calls while accessing the internet. Out of the many formats available, ADSL 1 and ADSL 2+ are the more popular speeds when using the ADSL service.

Cable is another type of internet service available on a broadband connection. A cable connection is specified to only those areas where dedicated cabling has been installed. A cable connection uses the dedicated cables so the customer doesn’t need a phone line and download speeds of cable internet service are similar to those of ADSL.

One of the newer types of broadband connections uses the mobile phone network. This is the mobile broadband or wireless mobile broadband service that is becoming more popular by the day. This connection allows the customer to be anywhere with their mobile phone to which the mobile phone provider has coverage. With the invention of the mobile broadband system, even more options are available to consumers and businesses. This technology is accessible through many different mobile devices, such as mobile phones and laptops through a portable modem.

With mobile devices data can be carried through these devices quickly and easily with the simple push of a button. These devices are used by both the business class and many people also use them for personal reasons. Some of the devices are extremely user friendly and have the higher download speeds that consumers demand today.

The speeds on these the mobile devices will allow a quicker download time for things like music, videos, and pictures, or for business files for the career minded individual that is always on the go. Each provider will have their own internet packages on their mobile phones so it is best to shop around for the best broadband deals and packages.

Another type of broadband service available is fiber optic broadband. This type of technology has some advancements and advantages over other types of broadband services and it is available in countries worldwide. This technology has faster download speeds than other technologies and will provide higher quality for many services. The use of fiber optic broadband options can also lead to the development of other more advanced applications.

The use of broadband service has become widely used and the number of providers for this technology has increased drastically throughout the years. It is important to not only shop around for the best broadband deals, but to also compare and know exactly what options you want to have in your house and home. Many websites are available for the consumer to choose the types of services they want. Most of the larger companies will even provide a custom package for those individuals who cannot find a package to suit their needs. By doing this, you are sure to find the best broadband service for your office or your home.

Security Cameras and Privacy Concerns

Security Cameras

How many times have you been walking down a sidewalk or in a public place and noticed that security cameras were aimed at you? Does this immediately bring to mind the term “invasion of privacy” or does it provide you with a nice, secure feeling to think that your safety is being looked after? Opinions on the subject of security vs. privacy vastly differ; some view security as top priority and others perceive the issues completely the opposite with privacy being the highest priority. The argument continues to escalate as more and more security cameras are installed nearly everywhere you go.

Terrorism has fueled the frenzy to cover most public places with cameras. Especially in airports you will find the very latest, high tech CCTV systems. Many of these state-of-the-art systems are designed to not only document activity but to feed the images into sophisticated software programs created for facial recognition and to detect suspicious behaviors.

The earliest security systems were only capable of producing somewhat grainy black and white images. Modern CCTV utilizes high resolution digital cameras to produce sharp, color images. This may seem a somewhat small advancement but the real significance of color technology comes into play when used forensically. For instance, if a bank robber flees the scene in a red car, a computer can use Video Content Analysis (VCA) to search the security film for any red car images captured on the film. VCA makes it possible to search for numerous parameters on security video. Search conditions such as “someone loitering around an ATM without using it in a reasonable time” can be entered into VCA to highlight possible suspicious activity.

VCA is a very useful tool for those monitoring behaviors in a crowded area. Airports make use of VCA to watch for anomalies in the crowd such as passenger presence in restricted areas or those exiting planes improperly. Crowded subway stations have been targeted by terrorists in the past and now many are making use of VCA to monitor crowds for suspicious behavior.

Many public areas such as parks, playgrounds and public parking facilities currently use CCTV to monitor safety. Many welcome the cameras as a step towards keeping them safer. However, there are those who disagree with the use of surveillance in public areas. These people argue that the cameras invade their privacy and that they should be removed. This debate is far from over as both sides to the argument are passionate in their positions.

In the US we are protected by our Constitution which provides us with a right against self-incrimination. The right protecting us from self-incrimination has been drug into the public security system debate by those who assert that the security cameras in public settings are contra-Constitutional. Those who disagree argue that security cameras in public settings are a crime deterrent and help solve crimes.

Civil liberties are the real issue in the debate over using security cameras, CCTV and VCA capable systems in public places. Which is the most critical; safety and security or privacy? Does the overall safety of society as a whole supersede the rights of an individual? One day the answer will come but in the meantime, CCTV use increases in public settings.

Private Investigators

Private Investigators

Private investigators, in their modern form, have been around since 1833. In France, Eugene Francois Vidocq started the first private detective agency. He developed many of the methods for investigation that are used today, including keeping records and reading ballistics. When people saw how successful he could be in the trade, private investigator agencies popped up all over the world. In the US, Allan Pinkerton started the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1850. The “Pinkertons” did both security and private investigation, mixing the two to create proactive security. In time, the field of private investigation became very popular, leading to such great fictional private detectives as Sherlock Holmes, Sam Spade, and Hercule Poirot, and to contemporary characters like Charlie’s Angels and Magnum P.I.

Private investigation has evolved over the years, but it has not strayed from its roots. Private investigators are hired by civilians to find answers to questions. They may have to find a missing person, they may have to catch a cheating spouse, or they may have to solve a murder that the police have no leads for. With the explosion in insurance fraud cases in the past few decades, private investigators are often hired by insurance companies to find evidence of fraud. People regularly hire detectives to track down a person that cannot be easily found, or that they have lost contact with. Private investigators are experts at finding evidence of all sorts of wrongdoing. They can be hired by individuals or corporations and in rare cases by law enforcement agencies to perform work that the police do not have time to do.

Private investigators have an arsenal of tools available to them. For surveillance work, long range listening devices, telephoto lenses, and passive audio and video recording devices allow them to see and hear what is going on in an area of their choosing. Databases and professional contacts allow them to track down missing people that the average civilian could never find. The one tool that private investigators have used since the beginning of the trade is the human mind. Most of what private investigators do involves solving problems by finding information. Private investigators must be trained to think like a detective in order to be good at the job. Many come from police departments or federal law enforcement agencies where they are trained extensively. Others go through civilian training courses and learn the job by doing it.

Private investigators provide society with a valuable service. The police are only available to respond to broken laws. Detectives are there to handle the cases that the police are not chartered to take, or those that the police are not making any headway on. Many detectives come from the law enforcement community and keep contacts within the community. They can get inside assistance from police departments to find information that the average person is not privy to. For a price, a private investigator will solve your problem, find someone, or discover the information that you are looking for.

The Beer Mug

Beer Mug

Beer remains one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the world. It can be found everywhere from parties, to bars, to picnics, to sporting events. There are lagers, ales, porters, dark beer, light beer, and everything in between. No matter what your taste in types of beer, chances are that you prefer to have it in a mug. Beer in a mug always seems to taste better, whether the beer came from the tap, is poured from a bottle, or even from a can. Having a frosty mug in front of you makes the beer all the more appealing.

When we use the word “beer mug,” we can actually be talking about several different types of receptacles. The first thing that comes to mind is the actual mug, which is a straight glass with a handle on the side. This comes from the German beer steins, which often came with a top that could be opened with the flick of your thumb. The steins came in many different styles. Some were plain and unadorned, some were extremely decorative, having bright colors painted on, family name or crest, or even specialized metal work. A richly decorated stein was a status symbol, showing you to be a person of means.

The pilsner glass is a little bit different. It is a relatively small glass that can have a short stem. The glass is usually thin, often having differing widths along its height. The pilsner glass is usually used to serve lighter beers. The thinness of the glass keeps the carbonation in longer, allowing you to take your time drinking it before it goes flat.

The pint glass is another popular mug. It is larger than the pilsner glass. It is named after its size, holding either an American pint or a British pint (which is a bit larger). The pint glass can be a simply conical shape, where the top rim is wider than the base. A jug style pint glass is different than the conical style. It has dimples in the glass and usually comes with a handle. The size is the same, but the shape is different. The rim is the same width as the base. These glasses are usually used for lagers and other types of darker beer. These beer styles have less carbonation and are not too far from flat when served.

The wheat beer glass is easy to pick out of a lineup. This glass has a narrow base and a wider top, with an hourglass type shape in the middle. The slender part of the glass is perfect for holding. The glass is designed to leave a “head” on the beer, which is the layer of foam on top when the beer is poured. These glasses are usually used for wheat beers, also called “weizens.”

No matter what type of beer you prefer, it is usually better in a mug. Whether you are a light beer, dark beer, or wheat beer fan, there is a mug that is perfect for you.

Didn’t Finish the Bottle?

Finish the Bottle?

Yes, you tried, but you just could not finish the whole bottle of wine. No reason to worry, you do not have to down it all in one sitting. Or perhaps you had a party and offered several types of wine, each of which were sampled but not finished. You do not have to throw the unfinished wine away. You can save it and finish it off later. Depending on what you are drinking, many methods are available to save whatever is left over.

The type of wine you are drinking dictates where you will store it after it has been opened. White and rose wines are best served chilled, so they will definitely go into the refrigerator after the bottle has been opened. Red wine is served at room temperature, so putting it in the refrigerator is not always necessary. If you are going to drink it within a short period of time, it can stay out. If you want to keep it for a few days, it should be refrigerated. Once a bottle of wine is opened, the clock is ticking on how long it will remain good to drink. You can usually get up to a week out of an open bottle, as long as there is at least half a bottle left.

One of the most important things to look out for is air making contact with the wine. When a bottle of wine is opened, air makes contact with the contents and immediately starts the process of oxidation. Some oxidation is necessary to prepare the wine for drinking. Too much oxidation makes the wine go sour, rendering it undrinkable. To slow the process, you should at least put a stopper or cork into the bottle. This will keep any new air from getting in. A more effective tool is a vacuum sealer. A vacuum sealer usually has a topper that goes into the wine bottle to form a seal, and then a pump which draws the air from the bottle. This leaves a vacuum seal inside of the bottle, slowing the oxidation process and allowing the wine to last longer than it would with just the cork put back in. This will not let the wine last indefinitely, but it will give you a few more days to finish the bottle. That can be extremely valuable if the bottle of wine was expensive.

Going beyond a vacuum device, a product is available that allows you to replace the oxygen in the bottle with an inert gas. The gas settles over the wine and stops the oxidation process. This causes the wine deterioration to slow down significantly, letting you store the previously opened wine bottle for a longer period of time. It will still not last indefinitely, but it will give you plenty of time to find the right time to finish it.

The act of opening a bottle of wine should not mean that you have to drink it all now. If you want to save it for a little while, you can.

Computer Viruses

Friday, January 22, 2010 posted by Travis Walton

Computer Viruses

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself over and over and infect a computer by deleting files. These viruses are not to be confused with spyware and adware that do not have reproductive ability. A true computer virus spreads from one computer to another through an executable code that is carried through the Internet (email) or removable media such as a CD or USB drive. Before computer networks become widespread, most viruses spread only via removable media, particularly floppy disks. Some viruses spread by infecting programs stored on these disks. Other viruses installed themselves into the disk boot sector. This would mean that they would be run when the user booted the computer from the disk, usually without knowing it. Computers of that era would attempt to boot first from a floppy if one had been left in the drive. This was the most successful infection strategy until floppy disks fell out of vogue.

Computer virus issues have plagued computers and computer users for years. No one is sure exactly where they started or what the first one was. However, we do know that the Univac 1108 and the IBM 360/370 had them. That puts the computer virus birth beginning in the early 1970’s or late 1960’s. Since then, users have been trying to prevent against and/or kill computer viruses.

More traditional computer viruses began in the 1980’s. This was driven by the more widespread use of personal computers. This also led to the increase of use of modems and software sharing. In the most recent history of computer viruses, there was a total epidemic in 1987-1989 in IBM personal computers. These viruses were known by names such as “Brain”, “Vienna” and “Cascade”. Letters would completely drop of monitor displays and computers would randomly start playing “Yankee Doodle”. The “Frodo.4096” virus was the first invisible virus that appeared. During DOS calls to the infected file it would simply change information so the file appeared to be unaffected by the user. The user would continue to use it and continue to spread the file to the rest of their computer and others. Most viruses in our current time are almost always invisible since systems are so much better at detecting these viruses now.

It took awhile after these viruses began, but people finally started to figure out that these crazy things were happening due to a virus and not the hardware. As users tried to scramble to fit this problem, viruses were infecting files and diskettes and hard disks. They were being spread like wild fire across the US, Eastern Europe and Russia. This huge infection began the research and development of the first anti-virus programs to eradicate them from computers.

Now, many users install anti-virus software that will detect and eliminate known viruses from computer downloads or executable files and codes. It also is important to do regular back ups of data. In the rare case that a virus infects your computer or computer network and wipes out files and other important information, most computer professionals can now reinstall the data with backup files.

Offering a Printer-Friendly Web Page Option

Printer Friendly Page

While in past decades, it may have been relatively simple for site visitors on most locations on the web to easily print a given page or element, the structure and presentation of information online has experienced significant changes in recent years, often making the prospect of printing a page as-is a considerable challenge. Offering a printer-friendly option is a step that some web designers take to help visitors retain valuable text or other information without having to go through the hassle of re-formatting the data or creating a separate document. Though the use of printer-friendly formats is fairly limited on the modern web, considering whether this feature may indeed be useful for a given project can help web designers cater to site visitors without compromising visual quality.
Some sites may pride themselves on being printer-friendly on the first pass; that is, they may allow for easy printing with data remaining intact without requiring any special steps or processes. Often, however, such sites may be especially plain or simple, and many of the projects completed by today’s designers rely heavily on vibrant and eye-catching visual presentations. Offering a printer-friendly option on graphics-heavy sites can greatly aid usability for site visitors, especially when projects are created for sites with codes, phone numbers, personal information, and other data sets that visitors may wish to remember or keep for their own records.

One of the greatest advantages of choosing to work with a printer-friendly page version is that its implementation is especially quick and requires minimal disruption on the original page itself. By highlighting a small link, either in text or in the form of an image, designers can provide visitors with this helpful alternative without breaking up the look and feel of the page or drawing attention away from the principal content. The printer-friendly page itself can often be created by simply printing the text-based data into a plain or lightly formatted HTML document, requiring little server space despite offering swift loading times.

In modern web site creation, there are a number of page elements that are likely to be considered by designers for implementation, and although it may not stand out amongst the many elements geared towards layout and visual design, the printer-friendly option nevertheless remains a reasonable consideration to make while planning and directly manipulating a site. Visitors who intend to keep site information handy are likely to appreciate the option and find its ease of use a substantial reason for continued loyalty with the company or brand, even those visitors who never eventually print a page may notice the option and be impressed with the site’s goal of making each user experience as convenient as possible. Printer-friendly page options may not be the best answer for every site on the modern web, but when relevant projects are correctly identified and this element is implemented in a clean way, designers can be sure that their planning will be well rewarded.

Facials Make a Difference

Beautiful skin is not always easy to have. Sometimes you may need a little more than your normal routine to cleanse your skin, exfoliate it, and ensure it is smooth to the touch. Your complexion, skin type, and desired results will all be considered when you come to us for a facial spa treatment.

Maybe you have lived a life that includes harmful skin practices like sun damage, smoking, over indulging in the occasional drink, or stressful situations. Perhaps the results of aging are beginning to show up on your face. One thing that can help erase some of the results that life tends to add is having a facial. Indiana State

Indiana When the first human beings inhabited Indiana is not known. Hundreds of sites used by primitive hunters, fishermen, and food gatherers before 1000 BC have been found in Indiana. Burial mounds of the Woodland culture (1000 BC to AD 900), when the bow and arrow appeared, have been located across the state. The next culture, called Mississippian and dating about AD 900 to 1500, is marked by gardens, ceramics, tools, weapons, trade, and social organization. It is well illustrated by remains of an extensive village on the north side of the Ohio River near Newburgh. The unidentified inhabitants are believed to have come up from the south about 1300, for reasons not known, and to have migrated back before 1500, again for unknown reasons.

The next Indian invaders, and the first to be seen by white men, were the Miami and Potawatomi tribes that drifted down the west side of Lake Michigan and turned across the northern sector of what is now Indiana after the middle of the 17th century. The Kickapoo and Wea tribes pushed into upper Indiana from northern Illinois. The southern two-thirds of the present state was a vast hunting ground, without villages.

The first European penetration was made in the 1670s by the French explorers Father Jacques Marquette and René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle. After the founding of Detroit in 1701, the Maumee-Wabash river route to the lower Ohio was discovered. At the portage between the two rivers, Jean Baptiste Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes, lived at Kekionga, the principal village of the Miami and the present site of Fort Wayne. The first French fort was built farther down the Wabash among the Wea, near modern Lafayette, in 1717. Three years later, Fort Miami was erected. Vincennes’s son constructed another fort on the Wabash in 1732, at the site of the town later named for him.

English traders venturing down the Ohio River disputed the French trade monopoly, and as a result of the French and Indian War, French Canada was given up to the British in 1760. Indians under Chief Pontiac captured the two forts in northern Indiana, and the area was not securely in English hands until 1765. The pre-Revolutionary turbulence in the Atlantic seaboard colonies was hardly felt in Indiana, although the region did not escape the Revolutionary War itself. Colonel George Rogers Clark, acting for Virginia, captured Vincennes from a British garrison early in 1779 after a heroic march. Two years later, a detachment of 108 Pennsylvanians, passing down the Ohio to reinforce Clark, was surprised by a force of French Canadians and Indians under Mohawk Captain Joseph Brant; most of the Pennsylvanians were killed during the battle or after capture.

Following the Revolutionary War, the area northwest of the Ohio River was granted to the new nation; known as the Northwest Territory, it included present-day Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. The first US settlement in Indiana was made in 1784 on land opposite Louisville, Ky., granted to Clark’s veterans by Virginia. (The new town, called Clarksville, still exists.) Americans also moved into Vincennes. Government was established by the Continental Congress under the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Again, Indiana unrest endangered all settlements north of the Ohio, and the small US army, with headquarters at Cincinnati, met defeat at what is now Fort Wayne in 1790 and disaster in neighboring Ohio in 1791. General Anthony Wayne was put in command of an enlarged army and defeated the Indians in 1794 at Fallen Timbers (near Toledo, Ohio). British meddling was ended by Jay’s treaty later the same year. Wayne then built a new fort (named for him) among the Miami.

In 1800, as Ohio prepared to enter the Union, the rest of the Northwest Territory was set off and called Indiana Territory, with its capital at Vincennes. There Elihu Stout established a newspaper, the Indiana Gazette, in 1804. After Michigan Territory was detached in 1805, and Illinois Territory in 1809, Indiana assumed its present boundaries. The federal census counted 24,520 people in Indiana in 1810, including a new Swiss colony on the Ohio, where settlers planted vineyards and made wine.

William Henry Harrison was appointed first governor and, with a secretary and three appointed judges, constituted the government of Indiana Territory. Under the Northwest Ordinance, when the population reached 5,000 adult males, it was allowed to elect an assembly and nominate candidates for an upper house. When the population totaled 60,000 (as it did in 1815) the voters were allowed to write a state constitution and to apply for admission to the Union. A short constitution excluding slavery and recommending public schools was adopted and Indiana became the 19th state on 11 December 1816.

Meanwhile, Indiana had seen Governor Harrison lead US troops up the Wabash in 1811 and beat off an Indian attack at Tippecanoe. The War of 1812 took Harrison away from Indiana, and battles were fought in other theaters. Hoosiers suffered Indian raids, and two forts were besieged for a few days. After the war, new settlers began pouring into the state from the upper South and in fewer numbers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. A group of German Pietists under George Rapp settled Harmonie on the lower Wabash in 1815 and stayed 10 years before selling out to Robert Owen, a visionary with utopian dreams that failed at the village he renamed New Harmony. In 1816, Tom Lincoln brought his family from Kentucky, and his son Abe grew up in southern Indiana from age 7 to 21.

Unlike most other states, Indiana was settled from south to north. The inhabitants were called Hoosiers; the origin of the word is obscure, but the term may have come from an Anglo-Saxon word for hill dwellers. Central and northern Indiana were opened up as land was purchased from the Indians. The Potawatomi were forced to go west in 1838, and the Miami left in 1846. Commerce flowed south to the Ohio River in the form of corn, hogs, whiskey, and timber. Indianapolis was laid out as a planned city and centrally located capital in 1820, but 30 years passed before its population caught up to the size of Madison and New Albany on the Ohio.

An overambitious program of internal improvements (canals and roads) in the 1830s plunged the state into debts it could not pay. Railroads, privately financed, began to tie Indiana commercially with the East. The Irish came to dig canals and lay the rails, and Germans, many of them Catholics, came to do woodworking and farming. Levi Coffin, a Quaker who moved to Fountain City in 1826, opened a different kind of road, the Underground Railroad, to help escaping slaves from the South.

A new constitution in 1851 showed Jacksonian preferences for more elective offices, shorter terms, a one-term governorship, limited biennial legislative sessions, county government, obligatory common schools, and severe limits on state debt. But this constitution also prohibited blacks from entering the state.

Hoosiers showed considerable sympathy with the South in the 1850s, and there was considerable “copperhead” activity in the early 1860s. Nevertheless, Indiana remained staunchly in the Union under Governor Oliver P. Morton, sending some 200,000 soldiers to the Civil War. The state suffered no battles, but General John Hunt Morgan’s Confederate cavalry raided the southeastern sector of Indiana in July 1863.
